Sexual violence against children, like any form of violence, does not exclude any cultural, ethnic or religious group, it occurs in all communities. Sexual violence against children in the Jewish community exists like in any other community, even though it is thought to be something that happens to "others" and not to us."
In recent years, parents, community leaders, rabbis, teachers have been denounced for sexual violence against children. It happens in families, in clubs, in schools, in yeshivot. There are also cover-ups, concealments, silences to protect the abusers. The unprotected are the children. Taking care of them is and should be our responsibility.
In all institutions where children and adolescents attend there must be Comprehensive Sexual Education, even in Yeshivot or religious spaces. Prevention work, both with children and adults, must be permanent. Action protocols must be incorporated in the event of eventual situations in schools, organizations, temples, clubs, and communities. All adult members of a community should know how to act when suspected of a situation of sexual violence against a child.
We must make profound changes in how the issue of sexual violence against children is addressed in the Jewish community. There are many victims and survivors among us.
“Lo Tishtok” in Hebrew means “You will not be silent”. The communities and their actors have the responsibility to break the silence, secrecy and complicity. Talking is starting to prevent.
