A few days ago we finished the virtual edition of SAY WHAT YOU WANT, our fanzine workshop for women victims of gender violence.
How to stay together being separated? It was a great challenge to adapt this project to a remote format, both for us as a team and for the participants, who with great openness learned new tools, transcending isolation to create together.
We share our experience and learnings.
The problem of saying
Violence breaks into the daily lives of women, silencing the word and drowning out their own voice. It damages autonomy, trust and freedom. Physical, emotional, economic and environmental insecurity impede the development of the victims' potential.
Saying, in a context of violence, many times, represents a risk of life. Silence becomes a mode of survival. Not only the word is blocked, also the emotional expression of that word.
Recovering the power of the word after an act of violence requires repairing and strengthening the self, which implies a deep understanding of what has been experienced and an emotional and sensory reconnection.
Say what you want, is a fanzine workshop * that aims to provide a creative, supportive and trustful space that promotes the reunion of each woman with herself, facilitating the expression of her feelings and needs, and stimulating self-confidence. and in others.
We developed this workshop as a new tool to support women to live a life without violence.
What is a fanzine?
A fanzine is a homemade self-publication, without intermediaries and therefore, a tool for free expression and empowerment. In the development of a fanzine, the roles of writer, draftsman, photographer, editor, and distributor come together in the person who creates it.
The workshop
The workshop is a space for the expression of thinking and feeling from an internal perspective: those who have lived it speak up, raise their voices in the political act that involves self-publishing, not asking for permissions, not being edited by anyone other than themselves. themselves.
Over the course of 7 weeks, we met virtually 15 women in 2 different groups. Each group created a collaborative digital fanzine.
We work on concepts of communication, creative writing, photography and editing, proposing to exercise conscious decision-making at each step.
Through collaboration and play dynamics, each of the participants elaborated what they wanted to say. We put the focus on the process over the results.
Collaboration was a central part of the workshop. Through the exercises all the participants had the opportunity to share their ideas with their colleagues. In this way, individual ideas were enriched and made more powerful thanks to the collective.
The problems of violence emerged laterally: we reached them through the artistic process, generating transformations in the process of each woman. We work jointly with our interdisciplinary team to contain these transformations, including ourselves in the comprehensive approach to the assistance that each woman receives in Shalom Bait.
Through this project we want to encourage more women to raise their own voice, we seek to awaken the creative self to express stories, experiences and feelings, we promote the creation of new networks and a sense of community among women who have suffered gender violence. We also hope to generate awareness and sensitization in society on the issue of gender violence.
The result of the workshop speaks for itself, in the fanzines we can read directly the feelings and experiences of women. Their voice rises by itself, their fears and their strength take off the veil and cross the limit of what "can be said", they say what they want.
Thank you all for expressing yourself and opening up to new ideas with us! We continue to investigate this new tool and co-creating this project together fills us with confidence and the desire to continue, we are not alone!
