Isolation is one of the main consequences of gender violence. Much is said about the shame felt by women who go through these situations, the fear of not being believed, and how this affects their close ties, how it drives them away and finally, they “isolate themselves”.
Undoubtedly they are factors that influence and worsen this situation. But are not the only ones. Isolation is a strategy used by the violent person to prevent women from having a containment network and thus perpetuate violence, control, submission and fear.
Violent behaviors are scary and intimidating. Jealousy, accusations, humiliations, the prohibition to carry out tasks outside the home, criticism of friends and family and economic dependence, among others, forcibly isolate women victims of gender violence.
Reporting is essential, but it is a process that takes time. It is a difficult decision that generates fear and uncertainty. Unfortunately, the violence does not stop at the time of the complaint, and many times the perpetrator does not comply with the precautionary measures. The responses of the State to this social problem, which reaches unthinkable figures, are insufficient.
It is clear that public policies for the prevention and assistance of gender violence are necessary and urgent: 1 in 3 women is a victim of gender violence. Femicide is the leading cause of death for women between the ages of 15 and 44. In 50% of families there is gender violence.
Putting a stop to those who exercise violence is not the responsibility of the person who suffers it. If the strategy of the violent is to isolate women, the strategy of women and those who support them must be to prevent it.
It is in the hands of each woman and of everyone together to empower ourselves and build networks and resources that are not functional to the violent.
On many occasions, and sometimes due to lack of information, we do not know how to accompany a woman who is going through a situation of violence.
We do not know how to recognize the situation, and if we are suspicious, we do not know how to act. Being informed, not walking away, expressing to them that they have our support, in other words, getting involved, is the only way to break that isolation or better yet, to avoid it.
Being part of a network, in any area of life, allows us not to feel lonely, to take care and be careful, to know that someone is accompanying us. It allows us to cooperate, find solutions and alternatives to a problem that affects us all.
“In this matter, it is a question of health and survival not to act or feel lonely and powerless. Hence the recommendation of teamwork, in mutual aid groups, networks, etc. whether you suffer from the problem or work to remedy it ”. *
