The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women was declared in 1999 by the United Nations General Assembly in commemoration of the Mirabal sisters, three political activist sisters who were assassinated on November 25, 1960 under the order of the dictator Rafael. Leónidas Trujillo, in the Dominican Republic.
This date, unfortunately, is not only a commemoration. It is a reminder of what still happens every day around us, and around the world. In Argentina, this year, until the beginning of November, 216 femicides were registered. In the last report on line 144 *, it is recorded that, of the cases of gender violence received, 99.57% were carried out by people who identify with the female gender. 77.5% corresponded to cases of domestic violence and in 80.7% of the cases, the violence was carried out by the partner or ex-partner.
Violence against women is exercised in different ways: physical, psychological, sexual, economic, symbolic, and in all areas of life: home, work, institutions, in the media.
communication, in the street. Other realities intersect and can make it more stark: poverty, migration, sexual diversity ... but statistics show us that gender violence does not distinguish social level, ethnicity, or religion: 1 in 3 women in the world suffer or have ever suffered some kind of violence. So what does it mean to eliminate violence against women? How to do it? In short, violence against women is a reality, it is our reality, and we cannot look the other way. To transform the society in which we live, we all have to rethink, review ourselves.
Are we being mistreated? Do we exert any kind of violence towards someone? What happens in our homes, in our jobs, how do we relate to our family and friends? Do we reproduce macho attitudes in our daily lives? What messages do we transmit to our children? Did we take the time to discuss this with them?
Just as there are multiple ways in which violence is exercised, there are also many ways to eliminate and prevent it. Informing us, opening ourselves to rethink and debate. Being attentive, listening when a friend, a co-worker, a neighbor, tells us about a situation that she is experiencing, believing her. If we do not know how to accompany this type of situation, there are institutions and organizations that can guide us.
Gender violence will never be alien to us. It is simply our decision to see it, understand it and get involved. To commit ourselves to this problem, from the place and the way in which we can do it, is to be part of the solution.
